Press release on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross
Rome – Sept. 14, 2016: On the ninth anniversary of the entry into force of Pope Benedict’s motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, we are glad to announce the participation of William Cardinal Levada, Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, to the fifth international Summorum Pontificum Pilgirmage in Rome.
His Eminence has indeed accepted to give the homily for our usual Solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica that will be celebrated at Noon, Saturday, October 29th. It will be a great joy and blessing to have Cardinal Levada, a former Archbishop of Portland, OR (1986-1995), united in prayer with the present Archbishop, the Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample who will be the celebrant of this Mass and will guide the pilgrims during the entire pilgrimage.
Let us be reminded that it was Cardinal Levada, as President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, who signed the Universae Ecclesiae instruction that confirmed the implementation of Pope Benedict’s motu proprio.

From the newsletter of the Monks of Norcia, Spring 2016.
For the second time in five years, the international Populus Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage will be back in Norcia. In 2014, pilgrims came for the closing of this important event that gathers lay people, priests, religious and seminarians from all over the world, devoted to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. On the Feast of Christ the King, His Eminence, Cardinal Walter Brandmüller, attended a Solemn Mass celebrated by Fr. Cassian, delivered a sound homily on the royalty of Christ and gave a blessing to the congregation.
This year the pilgrimage will be led by Archbishop Alexander K. Sample, of Portland (Oregon). Archbishop Sample is well-known for his deep liturgical sensibilities. As bishop of Marquette, he wrote one of the most important documents about sacred music, a pastoral letter entitled “Rejoice in the Lord Always”.
Archbishop Sample is convinced that “If we are transformed by the sacred liturgy, then we, as believers, can help transform the culture” as he told the National Catholic Register on March 2013. Archbishop Sample and the Monks of Norcia, following the example of Saint Benedict, share a great love for the Liturgy, sacred music and culture. This commonality makes the archbishop’s visit very fitting indeed.
The fifth Populus Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage will begin on Thursday, October 27 and will end on Sunday, October 30, the Feast of Christ the King in the old calendar. The highlight of the event will be a solemn procession on the streets of Rome and the celebration of Holy Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday. This year, the pilgrimage will begin in Norcia where Archbishop Alexander K. Sample will celebrate Holy Mass on Friday, October 28.
